Looking for a trip but have kids under age 5 or under 50 pounds? Our Short & Mild Rafting Trip is great for anyone seeking a milder experience or trying rafting for the first time. This fun, scenic float with our experienced guides will keep everyone happy and safe. Easy class II rapids are a great introduction for young children or those who just want to enjoy the scenic beauty of the river without getting soaked! This trip is open to families with children as young as 2 years old. For families with children age 5 and older we recommend the Half Day Rafting Trip.

We meet at our riverside facility 45 minutes in advance and then depart directly from our facility down the Colorado River. Our experienced guides pilot 16’ rafts capable of carrying 8 guests through roughly 6 miles of beautiful scenery. The most exciting rapid, South Canyon, can be up to class III during June runoff. After about 1.5hrs of float time, it’s just a 12 minute shuttle ride back home, making this the perfect primer to river experiences. Launch site and take out are subject to change due to water conditions but will always contain scenic views and a beautiful Class II float.
Class Rating: Class II, on the Colorado River, 6+ river miles, departs from our riverfront facility.
Age/Weight: Minimum age 2, no minimum weight, max weight 375lbs.
Meeting place: All trips meet at our location in Glenwood Springs, CO, which is about 2.75 hours from DIA, 1 hour from Vail and 1.25 hours from Aspen.

If we only had three hours to spend on the water and wanted show our friends or family what it's like to experience the thrill of Class III Colorado whitewater rafting and the beauty of Glenwood Canyon, this would be the trip we'd take them on. And if we only had two hours because everyone had plans after the trip, well, we'd probably cancel them so we could all go rafting.
It's perfect for first-timers, families, and people who like experiencing life rather than Snapchatting it.

Your experience starts by meeting at the Defiance boathouse in No Name, CO in beautiful Glenwood Canyon (which is just 2 miles east of the community of Glenwood Springs). There, we will gear you up, talk about the trip, and introduce you to your river pro. Then we'll shuttle up the canyon to Shoshone where we will put-in on the Colorado River. You'll find action right away as we navigate down the Class III Shoshone section. We'll follow that up with 2+ hours of scenic canyon float with occasional splashes and opportunities to jump in the water through lower Glenwood Canyon and into the community of Glenwood Springs.

Class I–III

Trip Length: 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours (dependent on river flow)

Departs daily @ 9:00am and @ 1:00pm

Check-In is 45 minutes prior to departure

Requirements: Paddlers must weigh at least 50lbs to raft through the Shoshone rapids. Paddlers under 50lbs (but over 30lbs) will join us at Grizzly Creek, which is just below Shoshone rapids.
Rapids aren’t your thing? No worries. We can still get you out there by putting-in below the Shoshone rapids at Grizzly Creek (aka the Scenic Canyon Half-Day Float).

At Defiance Rafting, we expect our guides and their passengers to display perfect paddling form when rafting through the Class III–IV Shoshone Rapids. When they do, which is mostly all the time, we reward their excellence by letting them raft it again. When they don't, we punish them by making them redo it, which, oddly enough, they never seem too upset about.

You'll eddy out at Grizzly Creek, which is just below the Shoshone rapids, help your river pro load your raft and gear, and then we'll head back up to Shoshone for a second round of awesome!  After a thrilling double-dose of whitewater, you will continue downriver for about an hour through beautiful Glenwood Canyon to Defiance HQ at No Name.

  • Class I–III (IV at higher water flows)

  • Trip Length: 2 to 2.5 hours (dependent on river flow)

  • Departs daily @ 4:00pm (June 15 - August 11) [Early and late-season departures twice daily @ 10:00am and 2:00pm]

  • Check-In is 45 minutes prior to departure

  • Requirements: Paddlers must weigh at least 50lbs to raft through the Shoshone rapids. Higher water levels typically occurring in late spring and early summer require that a participant be able to self-rescue in the event they fall out of the raft.
